How to Attract Hummingbirds | East Longmeadow

Hummingbirds are zippy little brightly colored creatures. Because they are so speedy, they burn a lot of energy and therefore must eat constantly.  Their extremely fast wingbeats make a hummmm sound which is where hummingbirds get their name. The sound is very high frequency, and just audible to humans.

Now that spring is in the air, Humming Birds are returning to the East Longmeadow area from their winter habitats. You can organize your yard to be most attractive to them and keep them coming back on a regular basis.

The Bird Store and More – How to Attract Hummingbirds

FEEDERS: Timing matters. You need to hang your hummingbird feeders just before the birds arrive (which means now!) The Hummingbirds will be here the first week of April. Hang hummingbird feeders. Instead of hunting from flower to flower, they can stop at your feeder and fill up. We offer a variety of hummingbird feeders and food so you can choose to make their rest stop creative, colorful and inviting.

Hang several feeders far enough apart that they are not in the same line of sight. Male hummingbirds can be territorial about their feeders, so having several will keep one hummingbird from dominating all the feeders.

WATER: After eating Hummingbirds need clean water to drink and wash. Circulating water features are very attractive to Hummingbirds. They don’t really like still water.
